Hello Bike Light Database readers,

I'm Nathan Hinkle, and I created and run this site – all the code, reviews, and database entries. I have had Type-1 diabetes since I was 3 years old, and have been doing the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes fundraiser since I was 5. Type-1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease which is unpreventable and currently has no cure. JDRF directly funds research towards better treatments and an eventual cure for people with T1D.

I don't run ads on this site and I don't ask for cash donations, but I would like to ask you to make a tax deductible donation to JDRF by sponsoring me for the Walk to Cure Diabetes.

The Portland, OR walk is on September 27th, 2015. Anybody who donates at least $10 by 11:59 PM Pacific Time on September 26th who mentions The Bike Light Database in the message field will be entered to win a free bike light.

For every 10 people or $500 raised by Bike Light Database users, I will add another light to the drawing, up to a maximum of 5 lights. Please share this contest on Facebook or Twitter; the more people who donate, the more lights will be given away!

Donation progress

Donation progress will be updated here at least once daily. You can also track overall fundraiser progress on the JDRF website, but the counter on their website displays progress for all donations to my team, not just donations which qualify for this contest.

Update – giveaway winners

Thank you to everybody who donated! Two winners have been selected and have received their lights – one Knog Blinder Road 3 and one Serfas TSL-750. You can still donate, but the contest is now over. I plan to run a similar giveaway for next year's JDRF fundraiser too.

Some details

I may add more lights if we get a lot of donations, but I promise to give out at least 5 lights if at least 50 people donate or $2500 are raised by people who mention The Bike Light Database in the memo.

Each person who donates will be entered once into the drawing, even if you make multiple donations. Amount of donation must be >$10 to be entered into the drawing; donating more will not affect your chances but will mean more lights are put into the drawing, and of course means more support for this important research!

I will select the winners by downloading the donations list from the JDRF participant website, selecting all donations which mention The Bike Light Database in the memo, numbering them sequentially, and using random.org to randomly select the appropriate amount of winning entries. Winners will be selected after September 27th, 2015, will be notified by October 2nd, 2015, and will have 7 days to provide shipping information to claim the light. Only donations made through the provided link can be counted; donations made to other walkers or general donations will not be visible to me and thus cannot be considered.

The lights being given away have been used for reviews on this site, and will not be in the original packaging; however, they will be tested and ensured to be in working condition before being sent. They will carry no warranty or guarantee of functionality. I will pay for shipping if the recipient is in the US, but will not be responsible for any lost or stolen packages. If the winner is outside the US, they may have to pay for shipping depending on the cost.

If it's illegal for you to enter a contest like this, or if your participation would incur any monetary or legal obligations upon myself, or if you already have more bike lights than you need and don't want any more, please consider making a donation but noting that you would like to abstain from the drawing.
