The 500 series mounts a generator at the axle hub, powered by magnets on the wheel. It is then wired to the light, which can be mounted on the handlebars (for the front version) or seat post (for the rear version). The light is high enough up to be visible, and requires no batteries or dynamo hub to run.

The SL500 option only has a flashing mode, and does not continue flashing after the bike stops moving.
